Snoring & Sleep Apnea
Snoring is often dismissed as a minor issue, but in some cases it may indicate a more serious condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)—a disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep.
What Causes Snoring?
Snoring occurs due to vibration of tissues behind the nose or in the throat caused by partial airway obstruction. Common causes include:
- Nasal blockage (deviated septum, allergies)
- Enlarged tonsils or adenoids
- Excess soft tissue in the throat
- Obesity
What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
Obstructive Sleep apnea (OSA) is a condition where the airway becomes completely or partially blocked during sleep, leading to interrupted breathing and poor-quality sleep. This in turn has long term effects on metabolism leading to hypertension, insulin resistance and dyslipidemia.
Common Symptoms of Sleep Apnea
- Loud, persistent snoring
- Pauses in breathing during sleep (noticed by others)
- Excessive daytime sleepiness
- Morning headaches
- Poor concentration and fatigue
Diagnosis
- Clinical evaluation and airway assessment
- Sleep study (Polysomnography)
- Endoscopic examination
Treatment Options
1. Lifestyle Modifications
- Weight management and exercise
- Avoiding alcohol and sedatives
- Sleeping position changes
2. Medical Management
- Treatment of nasal allergies or blockage
- Use of CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) ventilatory device
3. Surgical Treatment
- Correction of nasal obstruction (septoplasty)
- Tonsillectomy or adenoidectomy
- Procedures to reduce airway obstruction in the throat
We do an evaluation of snoring and sleep-related breathing disorders, offering treatment options ranging from lifestyle guidance to surgical solutions for long-term relief.
